Ellen Woodbury

Ellen Woodbury was a Directing Animator and Character Animator at Walt Disney Feature Animation for 20 years and brought to life many well-known characters, including Pegasus the flying horse in "Hercules" and Zazu the bird in "The Lion King".

Ellen began drawing and sculpting as a way to understand dimensional figures moving in dimensional space. She enjoyed the process and the resulting tangible artwork and has continued to sculpt in bronze applying many concepts of animation to her work. In January 2006, Ellen took a 5-day course in stone sculpture and fell in love with carving stone. Starting with hammer and chisel, she then completed four award-winning stone sculptures. She attended the Marble/marble stone sculpting symposium near Aspen, CO, in July, 2006, and learned to sculpt using power tools. As a result of that experience, she now carves large marble sculptures weighing up to 400 pounds, along with smaller pieces in bronze and stone.

Ellen grew up in Corning, New York. She attended the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University where she earned her BFA in Film and Art. She then went on to California Institute of the Arts where she earned her MFA in Experimental Animation. Her student animated films won national and international awards, which led to a long career as a Disney Animator. Ellen resigned her position at Disney in October, 2005, to pursue a career as an independent artist and sculptor.

Along with art, Ellen has a passion for horseback riding and skiing, from which she draws many of the figurative subjects for her sculptures.

"Movement is liberating and interests me most, both in the pose and in the texture of the subject. I love the challenge of animating the static form".
